Joe Mahoney is currently an assistant professor of journalism at Metropolitan State University in Denver (and taking limited assignments due to that commitment).

Previously, Mahoney was a staff photographer at the Rocky Mountain News, where in 2000 and 2003, he was part of the photo teams that won two Pulitzer Prizes for Breaking News Photography (Columbine & Colorado wildfires). He began his career at The Associated Press and spent the next 25 years covering Colorado, national news stories, politics, and the state's pro and college sports teams.

After leaving daily journalism, Mahoney was the director of multimedia for the PBS affiliate, KRMA-TV,  in Denver, shooting, editing, and producing short public policy documentaries and other work. He moved on to become an editor for a national journalism startup, iPondr.com, which closed in 2022.

In 2023, he accepted a tenure-track faculty position in the journalism department at MSUD.

As a rule, I usually do not refer to myself in the third person...
